Tyrone students enjoy national exam success

Omagh bomb victim is one of star performers
A LOCAL student, who was injured in the Omagh bomb, has been placed in the top five of a national 'A' level examination -which had a total entrants of over 22,000.
Roisin McCullagh, who attended the Loreto Grammar school in Omagh, received the top honours in Business Studies which she sat with a London examination body.
Other schools are celebrating this week after their students proved they were top of the class in both 'A' level and GCSE examinations.
Students from the Academy, Christian Brothers and Loreto Grammar in Omagh swept the floorboards at 'A' level, while St Ciaran's HS, Ballygawley, featured at GCSE level along with the Academy in Omagh.
And unusually two of the Omagh schools took joint honours in the academic stakes. A Loreto student took first place in English Literature (linear) while her counterpart in the CBS took first place in English Literature (modular).
At the Loreto, there were successes for two students - Roisin McCullagh and Joanne McCabe who took top place in English Literature in the CCEA examinations.
Roisin achieved the high marks in the AQA - a London examination house which is used for some subjects.
Roisin has gone on to study Law with French at Queens and Joanne is studying English at Trinity in Dublin.
At the Christian Brothers in Omagh, students Niall McSorley and Sean McCaul proved they were a class act by attaining top grades.
Niall took first place in Northern Ireland in English Literature and 2nd in Religious Studies and Sean took 2nd place in Art and
Niall has gone on to study Law at Trinity, while Sean is taking a year out before hopefully going to art college.
At Omagh Academy, there were celebrations after two students took the coveted top Clogher pupil, Janice Thompson took 3rd place in Northern Ireland in Spanish while another Clogher student, Cheryl Irwin took 1st place in Home Economics.
Janice has gone on to study Modern Languages at Edinburgh University while Cheryl has gone to Trinity to study Law. And at GCSE, the Academy also featured with a student taking Joint 3rd in English Literature. Jill McFarland attained the high marks, but despite this she has not chosen to take English for 'A' level -opting instead for Art, Business Studies and Home Economics.
At St Ciaran's HS in Ballygawley, a student took 2nd place in the North in Personal & Social (Modular) GCSE examination.
Linda McAninley who is from Galbally delighted not just herself, but her teachers when she took the top marks.
The star pupil, who now has ten GCSEs under her belt, has returned to St Ciaran's to do 'A' levels in Accounts, English and Religion.
Principals at the local schools were delighted with the successes of their star performers.
Colm O'Neill, of Loreto said: "We are delighted with Joanne and Roisin's success which is the result of hard work and dedication to study.
"I congratulate both girls on their outstanding achievements and I thank their teachers for their dedication and their families for their support and encouragement. It was a very difficult year for schools in Omagh and the examination successes in all the local schools are a great tribute to all involved in education".
The principal made particular mention of Roisin's achievements as the young pupil had been injured in the Omagh bomb.
Roddy Tierney at the CBS was also delighted with the achievements.
He said the school had a good track record in the CCEA examinations. "This was the 14th top place we have had in four years.
He said both Niall and Sean had worked hard to attain the top grades and he was proud of them.
Academy principal, James McBain congratulated his students.
"This is the second year in a row that we had three students in a range of subjects, and we have had to date, thirteen students who excelled in the examinations," he said.
