Corrs to play Omagh?
By: JOHN McCUSKER

THE centre of Omagh is likely to come to a standstill in two weeks time when Irish super-stars, The Corrs are expected to launch the UK's year 2000 celebrations from the town.
Negotiations are currently taking place with the chart-toppers' management and an announcement is expected early next week.
Thousands are expected to converge on the town centre for the September 3rd launch when torches will be lit from a special beacon and carried Olympic-style to cities throughout the UK.
TV presenter, Eamon Holmes has been booked to host the three-hour spectacular and a specially-erected stage will be constructed in front of the Courthouse. Street entertainment will also take place throughout the day.
Representatives from the Millennium Company met with Council officials in Omagh yesterday in an effort to finalise details of the event.
And a further meeting will take place early next week, after which the concert's line-up is expected to be announced officially.
Paddy Murphy, of the Millennium Company promised the event would be "something really special" for the people of Omagh as they looked towards the Millennium.
"Throughout the day there will be a range of street entertainment taking place in the town centre and a special concert will take place from 7-10pm.
"A large beacon will be lit and people carrying torches will run through the streets before these flames are then taken to other destinations throughout the UK and further afield to launch the Millennium celebrations."
Mr Murphy said negotiations were currently underway with The Corrs management. "But it depends very much on the band's timetable" he said.
"We have been working closely with the Council on this, and we hope there will be a tremendous buzz and bounce around the town on 3rd September" he added.
