Sadness marks Lady President's Day at Omagh
Lady President, Carmel Maguire's Day at Omagh Golf Club on Saturday last was played in an atmosphere of great sadness when members learned of the death of Sean McGrath, the 29th victim of the bomb atrocity.
Sean, husband of Nuala and brother of Danny, two members held in esteem at the Club was a good friend of all others.
The event was blessed with excellent golfing weather and some great scores were returned. Bridget Taylor again hit her best form to return a wonderful points score of 40 to claim the 1998 prize.
Runner-up was Claire Harkin with 39pts. Best Gross, Barbara Eakin, 26pts; 3. Sylvia Harte, 37; 0-18, L. Lee, 35; 2. C. McGuckin, 35; 19-28, F. Carlin, 33; 2. D. Pollock, 33; 29-36, G. Before the presentation of prizes a one minutes silence was observed in sympathy to the relatives and friends of Sean McGrath.
Sunday's competition was the qualifying round of the event organised to raise funds for the Bomb Disaster Memorial Fund.
Omagh golfers have been asked at many times during this year to subscribe to charities and have not been found wanting but on this occasion they have surely surpassed themselves in their generous support of the event, sponsored by Northwest Roofing Systems Ltd. The event was a huge success with the full days entry of ladies and gents culminating in a very worthwhile sum going to the Fund.
On the course players had a most competitive round, taking on high winds, slow fairways and fast greens not a combination for high scores but with dry conditions overhead everyone enjoyed the test.
Best score of the day was returned by Paul Travers and Richard Barbour, a fine 43 points. Second was Michael Ferguson and Eugene Bradley, also 43.
Best ladies team was Sylvia Harte and Dorothy Pollock, 41; 2nd. Frances Pollock and Margaret Robinson, 40pts.
The two winning pairs will go forward to Finals Day on 11th October.
