HANDBALL FRATERNITY SHARE IN OMAGH TRAGEDY
Like every other section of the community, the Handball fraternity in Omagh and surrounding districts, suffered tragically in the recent Omagh bombing.
The County Tyrone Handball Board would like to express on behalf of all its members their deepest sympathies to the bereaved and injured, especially the families of Brenda Logue, Gareth Conway and Brian McCrory, who all have close connections to our game.
In the wake of such a tragedy it takes a special effort to try to get back to normality and in an effort to do so, a special Co. Board Meeting will be held in Carrickmore on Thursday, September 10th at 8.30 p.m. All club delegates and Co. Board officials are asked to attend.
60 x 30 ALL-IRELAND SEMI-FINALS - KERRS DO IT AGAIN
Over the past three weeks Tyrone players have been involved in three All-Ireland semi-finals and were successful in one of these. Once again it was the Kerr brothers, Niall and Conor who came up with the goods. On Saturday last the defeated Limerick's Eamonn O'Neill and Seamus Fraser in two straight games 21-16, 21-17.
As the scoreline would suggest this encounter at Roscommon was a closely contested affair with the craft and determination of the Tyrone men, the deciding factor. This result leaves Conor and Niall on track to compete the double, having already won the 40 x 20 version of the Junior Doubles earlier in the year.
Their opponents in the final are Carlow's David King and Sean Ryan who they will meet in Roscommon on Saturday, September 19th. Little is known about their Carlow opponents and while they are sure to be capable players, Conor and Niall know they are well able on their current form to take this title.
SILVER MASTERS SETBACK FOR McCULLAGH AND O'BRIEN
John McCullagh and Peter O'Brien lost their second All-Ireland final of the year when they went down in two straight games 21-12, 21-18 to Cork's Buckley and Aherne in the Silver Masters Doubles played at Kingscourt.
Although defeated this was quite a good display by the Omagh pair who were on the comeback trail after about twelve years out of championship handball and the experience gained should stand to them as they attempt to go one further in the coming 40 x 20 championships.
NIALL KERR FAILS IN JUNIOR SINGLES
Kerry's rising star Dominic Lynch ended Niall Kerr's interest in the 60 x 30 Junior Singles All-Ireland semi-final.
At Kingscourt last Saturday, Niall gave his usual determined effort but could not prevent the Kerry players 21-13, 21-9 victory. Lynch is an exciting prospect who covers the court with amazing agility and had no real difficulty in winning the All-Ireland title at the weekend with a 21-10, 21-12 defeat of Carlow's David King.
ULSTER JUVENILE 60 x 30 FINALS
These were fixed for Kingscourt on Sunday, but because of a variety of reasons a lot of games didn't take place.
The Under-12 and 13 Singles and Doubles were refixed and will now take place in Loughmacrory later in the month.
Problems in the Under 14 and 15 grade resulted in only the U-15 doubles being played and in this Barry Daly and Colm McGeough were unfortunate to lose out in the tie-breaker.
Shane Grogan and Ciaran McCullagh got Tyrone's first success when they won the Under-16 Doubles and Ryan and Sean Daly took the U-11 doubles title without having to hit a ball, while Gary Hurson's U-17 singles match was rescheduled for midweek.
The All-Ireland semifinals take place in Kingscourt on Saturday and the Tyrone players will be hard pressed to make progress against their Minister counterparts, but if the two Daly's Ryan and Sean can hit top form they will be very hard to beat and must represent Tyrone's best chances.
All players are reminded that the County Championships will start as scheduled.
