COUNCIL LEADERS HAVE PRIVATE MEETING WITH PRESIDENT
Council leaders have private meeting with US President
DURING his visit to Omagh on Thursday last, the President of the United States had a brief private meeting with Chairman of Omagh District Council, Sean Clarke, and the Vice-Chairman, Allan Rainey.
Mr Clarke said that it was a snort meeting at which the President expressed his sorrow at visiting Omagh under such tragic circumstances. His primary concern was the victims of the bomb and he assured the people of Omagh that he would do all in his power to help the town recover from the bombing atrocity.
The First Lady, expressed wonderment as to the beauty of Tyrone, of which they had had a birds-eye view. Along with the President, Prime Minister, and Cherie Blair, Mrs Clinton offered her sympathy to the bereaved and her best wishes to the injured.
Describing the President as an impressive figure, Mr Clarke said that he did, however, look a little tired.
In terms of his own political career, Mr Clarke said meeting the President was certainly of great importance.
The meeting took place at the Leisure Centre and the Vice-Chairman was impressed by Cherie Blair's compassion, not only in talking about the victims of the bomb, but also in showing a certain tenderness when hearing of Cllr Rainey's wife's illness.
The Councillor who attended with his daughter-in-law, Thelma, said the both Mrs Blair and Mrs Clinton were excellent ambassadors for their respective countries.
Assuring Mr and Mrs Clinton a warm welcome not only for the present, but for the future, Mr Rainey said he was very impressed by the President's interest in the area.
Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Rainey, said he felt it was a worthwhile visit, and said he thought that the President had his finger on the pulse. Moreover, he said that Mr Clinton expressed a wish to return to Omagh at some time in the future.
