R.C.N. join chorus of sympathy
DEAR EDITOR,
The Royal College of Nursing wishes to express its deepest sympathy to the families, relatives and friends of all those who lost their lives and all those who were injured in the Omagh bombing of August 15.
It is difficult to find words of consolation that reflects the sheer enormity of this tragedy. It is impossible to contemplate the human suffering and pain, physical and emotional, that has devastated the community in Omagh, the surrounding villages, the town of Buncrana and families of the Spanish children and their teachers.
We also wish to acknowledge the phenomenal work carried out by the nursing staff at the Tyrone County Hospital in Omagh, the South Tyrone Hospital, the Erne Hospital, Altnagelvin, the Royal Victoria Hospital, the Mater, Belfast City Hospital, the Ulster Hospital and to thank all those nurses from all parts of Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland who went to the Tyrone County to offer help.
We have been talking to nurses from Omagh who went straight to the Tyrone County as soon as they heard news of the bomb. While distressed at the devastating scenes they witnessed, they have been describing the impressive teamwork and co-ordination between nursing and medical staff, and the contribution made by domestic, catering and laundry staff, who also came in to work when they heard the news.
One nurse told us that although there was amazing support between nursing staff and their patients and families, she said that "nurses were facing the worst of it as it came in."
It is in the days and months ahead, when the full impact of what has happened in Omagh begins to sink in, that nurses who "faced the worst of it," try to deal with the traumatic scenes and events of this tragic weekend.
We would like to make nurses aware that professional counselling is available through the R.C.N. If and when nurses feel the need to talk through their ordeal, it is important that they realise that this service is available.
It is still difficult to believe that this has happened. It is impossible to comprehend. Our thoughts are with all those affected by this atrocity.
