Happy memories of Omagh
SIR,
For more than a decade (1941/1953) I was engaged as a public official in providing freedom from want for the needy in West Tyrone. It was a rewarding experience. I experienced at first hand the friendliness and integrity of West Tyrone people from all walks of life.
Until 15th August my memories of County Tyrone were entirely happy ones. Happily they have been recorded for posterity. All that has now changed.
The people of the place I loved so well have been robbed of treasures that no one can replace - loved ones murdered, or maimed for life in body or spirit. If only I were able to offer solace but only God can do that. I pray that He will do so in generous measure.
By their edifying example the image of a community united in faith and courage transcends all. This image has shone brightly for all the world to see. The "Songs of Praise" concluded a week when the eyes of all the world were on sad, shattered Omagh and all involved are to commended. It was a most edifying act of Faith, Hope and Love.
My prayers and sympathy go out to all who have suffered. God bless them.
