Assemblyman praises RUC
WEST TYRONE assemblyman, Oliver Gibson, has written to the RUC in Omagh praising the officers for their actions in the aftermath of the August 15th atrocity.
Mr Gibson, who lost a relative in the Omagh bombing, said the RUC officers who had been on the scene of the atrocity and had worked since had gone far beyond the call of duty.
In the letter he says "Seldom do I write, but I feel genuinely compelled to convey on behalf of West Tyrone and Omagh District Council area our sincere thanks to the RUC.
"The unprecedented atrocity in our County Town of Omagh called upon the reserves of resourcefulness very far beyond the call of duty.
"The RUC in Omagh responded in such a magnificent manner that every one of us can but only say thank God for the RUC, they saved many lives."
"May I add that since 1981 I have represented Omagh town as a councillor, during the 70's as a commissioned officer of 6 County Tyrone UDR I worked closely with the RUC, as an elected forum member and now an assembly member, I have over the years many opportunities to compare the RUC with other world and city constabularies, being aware of the their unending stress and continuous attacks, both physically and verbally.
"None that I saw or evidenced could compare with the RUC. Any nation would be proud of such a constabulary.
The councillor said that on August 15th and since the RUC has "risen far beyond the standards and norms of the world's best."
"May I add my personal thanks and appreciation to each member of the RUC for their courtesy, kindness and gentle decorum at a time of great stress."
