CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE IN FOREFRONT OF SUFFERING
Children and young people in forefront of suffering
The Youth Council for Northern Ireland wishes to express its deepest sympathy to all those whose lives have been irreversibly damaged by this indescribable act of barbarity. No community should ever suffer the way the people of Omagh, and their Saturday visitors, have been made to suffer.
"Over half of those killed were children or young people," said Michael Murphy, Chairman of the Youth Council. "All of the young people of Northern Ireland identify very closely with this tragedy and sympathise with those who have been bereaved and injured," said Mr. Murphy.
"The town of Omagh, for many of us, has always epitomised the best in Northern Ireland. Its people have enhanced the lives of those around them through friendship, helpfulness and just good nature. Young people and adults throughout Northern Ireland, regardless of referendums or politics, are distraught by the sheer destruction wrought to human life and limb by this savage bomb. This bomb was manufactured and positioned by evil people," said Mr. Murphy.
"Somehow out of this carnage and out of the suffering and sorrow of young and old, the ordinary people of Omagh have become extraordinary people by their actions. They have given to the rest of us a renewed faith in people and a determination to achieve peace in Northern Ireland. The young people of the province have already shown commitment and desire to develop a new vision for our country," added Mr. Murphy.
The Youth Council has appealed to all young people to emulate the courageous love and forgiving nature of the young people, their parents and grandparents of Omagh. The young people and children of Northern Ireland desire to use their many talents to help build in our own province a society which provides for all of them opportunities to achieve their full potential in peace and prosperity.
