Bomb probe samples have just arrived
The Garda Siochana took 15 months to hand over vital DNA evidence concerning two main suspects in the Omagh bombing, it was reported yesterday (Sunday) in several newspapers.
Gardai arrested Seamus McKenna and Seamus Daly, who were named in writs by families of Omagh victims, on Real IRA membership charges in June 2003. Within hours PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Sam Kincaid asked that DNA samples taken from the two men be sent north to the Omagh bomb inquiry team.
Monaghan, the incident centre for the Omagh bombing south of the border, is only 32 miles from Omagh. However, those samples were only handed over on Friday, October 22, 15 months after the original request.
Relatives of some of the 29 people killed in the Omagh bombing are reported as saying they feared that the atrocity investigation is "becoming a victim of the peace process".
In other developments, the British-run agent who worked with the Real IRA along the border, Kevin Fulton, has revealed that he has still not been interviewed by the PSNI.
Speaking from a secret location, Fulton said: 'My solicitor received a request from Superintendent Norman Baxter, the head of the Omagh inquiry team, exactly a year ago and they have still not called me for interview.'
Fulton said a Real IRA man from his native Newry whom he alleges is a joint MK-Garda agent was also recommended by O'Loan for interview. So far, the PSNI has yet to request that this man be extradited for questioning.
