Stormont politicians show trust
THE Queen last night made a heartfelt plea for Northern Ireland's politicians to work together for a better future.
In a historic address to the Assembly, she told leaders that they can build a new trust and a new country.
Unfortunately, not all politicians were present. Sinn Fein decided to stay away, although they said they did not oppose the Queen's presence.
The nationalist SDLP stood shoulder-to- shoulder with unionist leaders in the chamber in a demonstration of cross-community support.
The people of Northern Ireland have welcomed the Queen with open arms on her three-day visit to mark her golden jubilee.
And the residents of Omagh, who have suffered so terribly in the past, were relieved that the Queen changed her itinerary to visit the scene of the Real IRA atrocity and talk to the victims.
But the vicious rioting which broke out a mile from Stormont yesterday shows that Northern Ireland still has a long way to go.
Barely a night goes by without sectarian gangs clashing at one of Belfast's interfaces.
The politicians at Stormont are leading by example in showing how both communities can work together for Northern Ireland.
