Truth can ease pain of Omagh
THE battle for the truth about what happened before the Omagh bomb is to take another turn today.
Families who lost loved ones in the worst atrocity Northern Ireland ever suffered are to grill Taoiseach Bertie Ahern.
They want to know exactly what Mr Ahern's security services told him in the hours after 29 people and unborn twins were murdered in 1998.
Campaigners believe the Irish Government is hiding the full extent of Garda operations in the run-up to the bomb attack.
We all know the RUC came in for some serious criticism for its handling of intelligence prior to the blast.
The gardai, too, have faced questions over information passed to them by an informer who said the Real IRA was looking for a car to carry the bomb.
Some may grow tired of the claim and counter-claim.
But for the families who are missing husbands and wives, sons and daughters they are right to fight for the truth.
If politicians in positions of influence know more than they are letting on they must come clean.
No one denies it was the Real IRA who murdered those people.
But if such a heinous crime is never to happen again we need access to the big picture, not rumours that will persist until the truth is known.
