Website bid to catch killers
CAMPAIGNERS for the victims of the Omagh bombing are set to use the Internet to name the people they claim were responsible for the atrocity, it was learned yesterday.
Members of the Real IRA and the 32 County Sovereignty Movement and could be named on the site in an attempt by the Omagh Support and Self Help group to bring the bombers to justice.
The site due to be launched in the next few weeks will take the Omagh group's appeal for justice around the world and show shocking images of the bombing No one has been convicted of the attack in August 1988 in which 29 people were killed in more than 200 injured.
The group said its intention was to provide information aimed at heightening awareness of the dissident republican organisation and its activists.
Michael Gallagher, spokesman for the Omagh victims' group, said the new site would be "hardhitting".
"We will have to get legal advice before we can decide what exactly we are going to put on the site but certainly there would be as much Information as possible about the political allies of these people.
"There will be a warning on the site about what people can expect when they look at some of the pictures we will be using," he said.
He added that naming those behind the outrage was an option they were considering.
He said that if their fight for justice is brought before the European Court, they would argue that the bomb was a war crime.
"If, as is being planned for the future, this case has to be taken before the international courts and those behind the attack are named as suspects, we will also name them on our site," he said.
"We haven't given up on the justice system here, but if it comes to it we will not hesitate in going to Europe or to the United Nations."
The move came the day after Taoiseach Bertie Ahern said he would broadcast a plea for justice on the second anniversary of the massacre.
Although both the RUC and the Gardai say they know the killers, their investigations have been frustrated due to lack of evidence.
