THE kings of European and English football brought a new lease of life to the people of Omagh last night, as a sold-out St Julian's Road played host to a fantastic occasion.
Sir Alex Ferguson brought his side to the town to aid the fund raising efforts of the local soccer club for the Omagh Memorial Fund.
And United treated their fans to a goal feast, Terry Sheringham grabbing four. Irish captain Roy Keane and Gary Neville both returned to action.
Ferguson said afterwards: "The warmth of the place and the people was tangible. It was satisfying for us to be part of this occasion.
"We recognise the support the Ireland has given us over the years, so for us to take part in this was a very proud moment."
Crowds swarmed around the venue and many hundreds without tickets, watched from rooftops, trees and even an off-duty fire engine.
United brought to Omagh the European Cup. the Premiership trophy and the FA Cup and went on a lap of honour around the tiny Irish soccer venue which has never played host to such an occasion or audience.
Omagh Town manager Roy McCreadie said: "It has even surpassed my wildest dreams."
