Poppy Day tribute to Omagh victims
THE town of Omagh mourned its war dead yesterday, still bearing the scars of the terrorist bomb which killed 29 people.
Traditional Poppy Day services were held along-side tributes to those murdered by the Real IRA in the August 15 bomb.
The usual parade along Market Street, the road devastated by the blast, had to be re-routed to avoid the bomb-damaged buildings.
A Poppy Day spray was laid at the site by Dave Gaven, branch chairman of the Royal British Legion.
The parade of ex-servicemen and youth organisations then made its way to the College of Further Education for the annual Remembrance Service.
Roy Maguire, president of the Omagh branch of the Legion, read out a list of victims of the August 15 atrocity, before speaking the traditional ode to the fallen.
Wreaths were laid by locals and visitors, including Allan Rainey, vice-chairman of Omagh District Council, William Thompson, MP for West Tyrone, and Oliver Gibson from the Northern Ireland Forum.
Several relatives who lost loved ones in the bomb were among the large crowd.
In Enniskillen, the 11 victims of the 1987 Poppy Day bombing at the Cenotaph were remembered.
