PRIEST OUTRAGED BY ABUSE CALLS

THE Catholic Priest who told yesterday how republican hardliners Bernadette Sands and Mickey McKevitt had professed their innocence to him, has received threatening and abusive phone calls.
Canon Desmond Campbell said last night he spoke to anonymous callers who accused him of being sympathetic towards the Omagh bombers.
But the outraged clergyman said last night: "I have never condoned anything like this in my life, nor would I.
"I simply repeated what Mr McKevitt had said to me. I never said whether I believed or disbelieved him. I simply felt I had to repeat what he said."
The priest also told how anonymous callers to his clerical home had told him to get coffins ready for Sands and McKevitt.
"I am very disturbed that anyone would think I would condone a bombing. I would like to reiterate that I simply repeated what Mr McKevitt had told me.
"I passed the information onto the gardai who I believe will deal with it adequately."
The threats which were left at the priest's home echoed threats phoned in to McKevitt's shop in Dundalk.
Yesterday Bernadette Sands told how she had received death threats while she worked at her shop.
