EVIL MEN MUST BE CRUSHED

Evil men must be crushed

THE statement from the so-called Real IRA claiming responsibility for the Omagh massacre is as terrifying as it is pathetic.
The only words anyone wanted to hear from the fanatical splinter group were the ones pledging that the atrocity would be their last.
Instead of that, the families of the dead and injured were given a shallow apology and a shameless admission that the "war" would continue.
It is the only interpretation of their sick claim that makes sense.
With the entire world urging them to ensure no other family suffers the heartache which the people of Omagh have been subjected to, the breakaway terror gang said the attack was part of an "ongoing war".
That can only mean that the numbing grief and disbelief felt by decent people are alien emotions to them.
They seem perfectly capable of surveying the carnage their actions have caused, and still plot to do it again.
It beggars belief that the renegade terrorist could issue such a cold and heartless statement just hours after the people of Omagh, Donegal and Spain began burying their dead.
The bombers who showed no respect for the lives of their 28 victims have now shown them the same contempt in death.
Last night, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern threw down the gauntlet to the cowards who tried to blame others for their murderous crimes.
He warned them to call a ceasefire within 24 hours, but it is clear that they will not.
He must now follow through with his vow to crush them with every and any available means.
It is now the only hove we have of preventing another tragedy like the massacre at Omagh.
