STARS BRAVE THE ELEMENTS TO GREET THE NEW YEAR IN STYLE

Stars brave the elements to greet the New Year in style

WHILE Dublin buzzed and Cork partied, most of the country battened down the hatches and stayed inside pubs - the tales of after hours would make a book alone - because of the atrocious weather which favoured us over the New Year period. .
Boyzone performed for four nights at The Point and then moved on to Belfast for two concerts - one in aid of the Omagh fund. Who would have imagined about four short years ago a band of boy performers would have such an impact? It's a lot to do with Ronan Keating, for certain.
Denise Van Outen and her boyfriend Jay Kay partied in the POD on New Year's Eve and in Lillie's, Eddie Irvine, Ken Doherty, Jasmine al-Fayed, sister of Dodi, and a million others, saw the year end and begin.
At the Telecom Eireann Awards Gay Byrne's daughter Crona accepted the Personality of the Year award on behalf of her Da, our national institution, who has recently retired from radio. Word was that he was nursing the 'flu in Donegal and couldn't be there. Or maybe he'd just had enough of post-Christmas in the big smoke and couldn't face coming back. Think of how his last radio show on Christmas Eve from Grafton St ended. He was bundled into a car by the increasingly popular D'Unbelievables and carried off without even a goodbye. Perhaps returning to collect the award in the Conrad would have been all too maudlin for Ireland's king of broadcasting. But who will be the new king when the Late Late Show ceases for good in May, I wonder?
