Healy-Rae goes blowing his horn
AS I sat down to file my last Saturday column of 1998, two entertainers sprang to mind as being the busiest of all.
Tyrone-based singer-songwriter Eamon McCann was rarely out of the recording studio over the past 12 months, combining his career with a heavy schedule of live performances. His long-awaited EP single is now available after a marathon session with producer Martin Cleary, recording 16 tracks, including five self-penned originals.
The first track is an uptempo jive number entitled, I Will Love You, which should prove popular with his thousand of dancing fans around the country. There's also an authentic country number, Walk The Way The Wind Blows, and a Christmas song called Joseph's Dream.
Producer Martin Cleary has joined Eamon's band playing, lead and steel guitar and sharing vocals with keyboard player Ryan Turner. If you feel like writing to the Eamon McCann Fan Club, the address is: Gowran Grange, Punchestown, Naas, Co. Kildare.
Another extremely active performer all year long was Dungarvan-born Paddy O'Brien, who has also released a superb 16-track album.
Share My World sees Paddy easing his way through a mix of country, Irish, gospel and middle of the road.
This has been yet another hugely successful year for the Co. Waterford star. Early in 1998 Paddy made several appearances on CMT, followed by the release in the US of his single, Good Morning Memory. His current album, Share My World, contains Far Side of Jordan, Seven Tears, Going Home and many more outstanding songs.
Away from the frantic world of politics, Kerry TD Jackie Healy-Rae likes, nothing better than to indulge in his favourite pastime, playing the saxophone. The peak-capped TD has joined trumpeter Johnny Carroll on Be My Guest, which recently went on release. He has long been a fan and friend of Johnny and was delighted to be included on the new album which features a diverse mix of well-known tunes from Fats Domino's Blueberry Hill to the inspirational hymn, How Great Thou Art.
There's a splendid piece from the blockbuster movie Titanic, My Heart Will Go On, which was a huge success for Celine Dion. And who knows, maybe Jackie Healy-Rae might get a solo spot at next year's Guinness Cork Jazz Festival!
It's going to be a case of sisters doing it for themselves for Women's Little Christmas. Heading for a date at the Ard' manning House in Togher, Cork, on Wednesday, January 6, will be sisters Sandy Kelly and Barbra Ellis. For the past number of years, they have pencilled in this Cork venue for a popular ladies' night out.
Another popular venue on Leeside is Elroys on Sullivan's Quay. It's going to be a, rocking good week which kicks-off on Monday with So Reel, followed by The Whole Shebang on Tuesday and Rhythm Culture on Wednesday.
For the Omagh Fund album, Across The Bridge of Hope, many of our own major artists offered their services - including Boyzone, with Words; Sinead O'Connor, with the Abba hit, Chiquita; Van Morrison, The Healing Game; Paul Brady with The Island and a Christmas track, Silent Night, by Enya. The title of the album is taken from a poem written by 12-year-old Sean McLaughlin shortly before his life was taken at Omagh. Support the cause - buy the album.
My own list of favourite Irish albums of the year includes Do -You Come Here Of ten, recorded at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. "It was a great buzz appearing at the Waterfront," says Muriel Day, one of the many artists on the album. Muriel represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest in the 60s with Wages of Love.
