VOLUNTEERS CARRY OUT SPRING CLEAN OF OMAGH MEMORIAL GARDEN
Volunteers carry out 'spring clean of Omagh memorial garden
THE 'Garden of Light' Memorial Garden has been the focus of a Prince's Trust voluntary project whereby a team of 12 young volunteers from the Omagh district completed a new planting scheme and general 'spring cleaning* over a two-week period.
The voluntary project was facilitated by Omagh District Council working in partnership with The Prince's Trust and South West College. Commenting on the project the council chairman, Mr Frankie Donnelly, commended the hard work and interest shown by the team.
He said: "It is so encouraging to see the enthusiasm and effort which this group has put in to this voluntary project despite the inclement weather conditions over the past two weeks. I hope that they will all have grown in confidence through this experience and be able to draw on the valuable skills which they gained in order to complete their Team Challenge and progress to meaningful employment."
During their two-week project, the team of volunteers completed a new planting scheme in the memorial garden to replace an area of chamomile, which had not survived the extreme weather conditions of the last winter. The newly-planted areas have been designed to enhance the sensory experience and to introduce a range of colours into the garden. They also dug a new bed and planted a hedge along the railings at the side of the garden and undertook a thorough cleaning of the pond.
