St Joseph's Guides to set up Omagh unit
ST. Joseph's Guides have announced that they are to set up a unit in Omagh and will be celebrating this launch with a special Mass in the Sacred Heart Church, on Sunday.
Taking place from 3pm, guiding units from all Northern dioceses are invited to attend, as well as representatives from St Joseph's Guides' National headquarters, in Dublin. It is also hoped that a number of local, regional and national dignitaries will be present. Bishop Lagan will be the main celebrant and as well as clergy from local parishes, other members of the clergy will be invited to concelebrate the Mass.
The newly formed Derry Diocesan Youth Choir has kindly agreed to lead the music, and the Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People, Patricia Lewsley, will be the guest speaker.
Commenting on the decision to reform the group in Omagh, unit leader, Natasha Eccles, said: "There was an address from Terry Waite read out at the families'
remembrance service to mark the tenth anniversary of the Omagh bomb. In it was included a most profound statement about the importance of creating not just a static memorial to Omagh's victims, but a living, and lasting, legacy involving our young people.
"It is now our desire, in Omagh, to tell a positive story and to show that, after 10 years, many are looking to the future and to the very positive things that are happening. It is in the spirit of this statement, that after a lengthy absence we are starting up a guides unit again in Omagh.
"We have registered approximately 80 girls. At present, I am led to believe that we are the only unit in the Diocese of Derry to have achieved such success with recruitment, in recent times. The establishment of this unit will be a very valuable part of our future in Omagh - the interest level, to date, is testament to people's desire to move on."
