Policing Board seeks meeting with Chief Constable
The chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, Professor Sir Desmond Rea, has said he is hopeful of scheduling an urgent meeting with the Chief Constable, to discuss the scathing judgment given by Mr Justice Weir in last week's Omagh bomb trial.
Following a critical assault by Mr Justice Weir on the police investigation, calls have been made for a thorough investigation into the 'thoughtless and slapdash', and at times deceptive, processes he judged were employed by certain officers at the time.
Speaking after last Thursday's verdict, Sir Rea said: "The Omagh bombing was a terrible atrocity and has had a devastating impact for all those families who lost loved ones and who were injured in the attack. Their suffering continues.
"Copies of the judgment and verdict of Mr Justice Weir to acquit Mr Sean Hoey on all counts are being sent to all Board members. Members of the Board will note in particular Mr Justice Weir's final conclusion.
"Having carefully studied the judgment, the Board will discuss Mr Justice Weir's findings and the issues arising from the case with the Chief Constable at the earliest opportunity."
