Omagh bomb survivor honoured for 'exceptional achievement'
Omagh bomb survivor, Claire Bowes, nee Gallagher, was honoured at the National Training Awards in London, for her 'exceptional achievement through training excellence and skills development'.
One of eight winners from across the province, Claire received the UK's number one training accolade at an awards ceremony in the Royal Lancaster Hotel.
Having lost her sight in the 1998 bomb atrocity, Claire turned down the opportunity to attend a specialist school, ultimately graduating from Queen's University, Belfast.
Learning new ways of doing everything, including using assistive technology, she then attended a course at the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB), exploring music with children, before going on to volunteer with the organisation.
Now herself a professional Eye Clinic liaison officer, Claire has made exceptional strides in developing her skills, and offers emotional support, advice and onward referral for people diagnosed with serious sight loss.
Enabling people to adapt to difficult circumstances, retain confidence, access available support and quickly regain their independence, Claire provides an invaluable service during a traumatic time.
Employment and Learning Minister, Sir Reg Empey, paid tribute to the successful entrants: "Once again Northern Ireland's high standards in training have been recognised at the National Training Awards. We continue to produce a consistently high standard of entrant and this has been borne out by our continued success in this showcase competition."
He added: "Each of our winners has shown exceptional strengths in the field of workplace training. They are an example of how skills development is vital in contributing to, not only better business performance, but also to the future social and economic growth of Northern Ireland. "
