Man in court on bomb car charge
A DUNDALK man has appeared before Enniskillen Magistrates Court charged with supplying the car, which was used by the Real IRA in the Omagh bomb of August 15.1998.
Anthony Joseph Donegan (34), of Aston Drive, Dundalk, was arrested in Newry on Monday, and is charged with providing a maroon-coloured Vauxhall Cavalier to terrorists between August 11, 1998 and August 16, 1998.
The labourer stood in the dock with a jumper draped over his shoulders as the charge was put to him in the court yesterday morning (Wednesday)
A detective sergeant told the court that, when he charged and cautioned the accused at Omagh police station, he had replied "not guilty".
The detective said he believed he could connect the accused with the charge, and the defendant was remanded in custody to appear by video link at Omagh court on March 8.
The only man brought to trial over the 1998 atrocity was freed on bail last month after winning and appeal against his conviction.
Colm Murphy (51), from Dundalk, was jailed for 14 years in 2002 for conspiracy to cause the explosion.
But the Court of Criminal Appeal in Dublin set aside the conviction on January 28 and ordered a re-trial on two grounds relating to the evidence of detectives at his original trial.
