Omagh set to host emotive new exhibition on 'The Summer of 98'
IMAGES from the aftermath of the Omagh bomb are to be displayed in the town next week with the opening of an emotive new exhibition by Castlereagh artist, Ray Duncan.
Inspired by the events of that fateful year, 'The Summer of '98' is a powerful collection of images based on the press coverage of the Omagh atrocity and the murder of the three Quinn children in a sectarian arson attack on their Ballymoney home during the Drumcree protests that year.
Ray Duncan teaches art at Castlereagh College, and has been painting scenes from the Troubles since they first began.
His inspiration for this new exhibit came from press photographs and video stills of the two atrocities, which, he says, lends a 'fractured' quality to the images and adds to the sense of shock and disbelief at the tragic loss of innocent life.
An award-winning artist, Mr Duncan's latest display is the culmination of two years' work, which has produced some 14 paintings.
A selection of oil on canvas, charcoal studies and prints, the collection of stylised images was born out of anger at the deaths, but has evolved to become a commemoration of the individual lives that were lost.
The exhibition, which has previously been displayed at the Engine Room Gallery in Belfast, Castlereagh College, and Benburb Priory, has been brought to Omagh by the Omagh Support and Self Help Group, and will go on display in the Tourist Information Centre on Tuesday at 9am.
