Website to educate on Omagh atrocity
THE horrendous aftermath of the Omagh bombing is to be displayed on a website developed by the Omagh Victims' Campaign Group.
Focusing on media coverage of the atrocity of August 15, 1998, which killed 29 people including unborn twins, the site will form an archive of material relevant to the disaster.
Sharon Watters, co-ordinator of the Omagh Victims' Support Group, said there was a need for all the information to be stored collectively so people would never forget.
Preparation for the website is still in the conceptual stages, but organisers hope it will be operational by June next year.
With funding from Omagh Local Strategy Partnership, the group is recruiting 40 volunteers to help catalogue, scan and archive the vast amount of material written about the bombing and the campaign for justice by victims and families since.
Input from some of those personally affected by the bomb will be included on the site.
It will also look at the effect of other devastating terrorist attacks, such as the Madrid bombing.
Group spokesman, Michael Gallagher, said the website would be as wide as possible in content, dealing not only with the media coverage, but also with the human cost of terrorist acts.
He said there was a need for such a site which could be accessed by those wanting to know more about the tragedy and others of its kind.
