£16m compensation awarded to victims of Omagh bombing

VICTIMS of the Omagh bombing have been awarded over £16 million in compensation, the Government has revealed.
The Northern Ireland Office has said that it had made payments to over 800 people who claim to have been injured or bereaved following the 1998 atrocity,, which killed 29 people and unborn twins.
However, police figures put the number of those injured at less than 600.
An NIO spokesman said that a total of 808 cases have been fully settled by the Compensation Agency, while interim payments were made to another 26 people and that 42 of the 850 criminal injury claims lodged remain unresolved.
"The total paid is £16 to £17 million. We are working towards an accommodation in all cases," he said.
