Dublin government-ordered Omagh inquiry report on way
THE findings of a Dublin government-ordered inquiry into allegations that Gardai failed to pass on vital intelligence to the then RUC about the Real IRA's plans to bomb Omagh, are to be published.
The three man inquiry team was due to complete its report by the end of last year, but the time frame was put back, as a result of additional information being studied.
The team is expected to submit its findings by the end of the month to Justice Minister Michael McDowell, who has pledged to publish the report, apart from security sensitive details.
The inquiry team comprising former DPP Eamonn Barnes, former government secretary Dermot Nally and ex-Department of Justice Secretary General Joe Brosnan, heard evidence from six Garda witnesses refuting the claims.
The allegations by a Garda sergeant currently suspended and facing criminal charges have been described by senior Garda officers as ludicrous.
The sergeant made his claims in a statement to the Northern Ireland Police Ombudsman, Nuala O'Loan. Details were leaked to the media.
