OMAGH BOMB SCARE BRANDED 'COWARDLY ACT'
IN THE wake of the latest bomb scare in Omagh on Tuesday afternoon, strong condemnation has been sounded by the president of the Omagh Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Bill Reilly, on behalf of its members.
The centre of the town was evacuated for about two hours after police received a bomb warning that there was a device in the "Omagh town area".
Businesses were forced to close, and cases were halted at the Magistrate's Court in the courthouse.
In a statement yesterday Mr. Reilly said on behalf of the members of the local Chamber of Commerce and Industry he "unreservedly condemned" the continuing bomb scares within the town centre.
"The economic effect on the town centre traders is enormous, especially at a time when trading is so difficult," Mr. Reilly said. "However, the traumatic effect on people, most of whom remember Saturday, August 15 1998 and many of whom were related or even involved with the event is even more serious."
Mr. Reilly called on all authorities to "leave no stone unturned in their efforts to stamp out these scares and to allow the people to try and rebuild their lives and businesses as is the right of any civilised community".
He added that the Chamber would continue its efforts to bring Omagh back to normality.
Meanwhile, SDLP member of the Assembly for West Tyrone, Mr. Joe Byrne, also condemned the bomb scare as a 'cowardly act' by individuals were only damaging the economic life of the town.
Terrorising
Said Mr. Byrne: "The culprits are cowards who are terrorising the community and have no sense of the damage they are causing to the economic life of their own town."
There have been more than 70 alerts in Omagh town centre since the bomb of August 1998.
