MAN DIED 21 DAYS AFTER BLAST
Man died 21 Days after blast
WERE it not for intensive medical intervention the death of Omagh marketing consultant, Mr. James Joseph (Sean) McGrath, would have been much more rapid, the Omagh inquest has heard.
Mr. McGrath died on September 5 at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, from respiratory distress with kidney failure brought about by the injuries he received in the Market Street bombing 21 days before.
Casualty Ward sister, Helen Patterson, said that Mr. McGrath had been flown by helicopter to the hospital, arriving at around 8pm on August 15.
She said he was triagged at the door and transferred to the resuscitation, where he was incubated.
In his report the pathologist, Dr. Derek Carson, said his post mortem report revealed that death was due to lung injury and adult respiratory distress, and his death was contributed to by kidney failure.
The coroner, Mr. John Leckey, said that Mr. McGrath's death would have occurred much more rapidly had he not received expert medical treatment.
He said Mr. McGrath had been kept alive in intensive care in hospital in the hope that he would have survived, but he did not.
Under cross-examination, Dr. Carson said that the prognosis for Mr. McGrath's recovery had been pretty bleak, but there were others who had also suffered severe injuries and survived and it had been hoped Mr. McGrath would recover too.
Mr. Leckey commented that the human body could be a resilient organ, but young people were better placed to survive.
He went on to extend sympathy to the next of kin of Mr. McGrath.
