Beragh woman died instantly
THE family of Miss Esther Gibson were told that the young Beragh woman would have died instantaneously from her injuries as a result of the Market Street car bomb.
Miss Gibson (36) had become engaged just a short time before the explosion.
During the harrowing evidence detailing Miss Gibson's death members of her family sat together in the 'Family Area' of the Minor Hall at Omagh Leisure Complex.
The inquest heard from Detective Inspector Colin Milford, who assisted Miss Gibson's sister, Elizabeth Catherine Gibson, to identify her.
The identification of Esther was corroborated by Miss Gibson, who went on to tell the inquest that Esther had gone to town at 8.30am for work, and had returned home for lunch before going into town again at around 2pm.
In his report the then deputy state pathologist, Dr. Derek Carson, said that Miss Gibson had been struck from behind, suffering severe injuries to her head and pelvic area.
He said her death would have been rapid, if not instantaneous.
The coroner, Mr. John Leckey, extended sympathy to the late Miss Gibson's family.
Mr. Barry Fox, who appeared for Miss Gibson's next of kin, thanked the coroner for his kind remarks, and went on to thank the members of the RUC who involved themselves in the tragedy, and he went on to extend thanks on behalf of the family to all other services involved.
He said the family had to suffer interminably due to this matter. They were thankful to the RUC and the services for their work on the day and since and for any help they offered in the future.
