Churches hold acts of remembrance
CHURCH services at the weekend in Omagh, were dominated by the second anniversary of the Omagh bomb.
A special anniversary prayer was composed for the occasion by members of Omagh Churches Forum.
Reverend Robert Herron explained that the anniversary prayer was a guideline for local church leaders, which could be used or adapted according to the needs of the local congregations.
The Sunday service from the Sacred Heart Church was broadcast by RTE radio on Sunday morning.
On Tuesday evening the service at Christ the King Parish Church, Cappagh was also broadcast on radio.
Fr. Kevin Mullan explained that although relatives had asked for the anniversary services to be kept low-key, the words of the prayer were included in normal Sunday Service.
"It was about the awareness of ongoing suffering and a call to care for each other," he said.
The special anniversary prayer read was as follows:
The days of August have slowly and sadly brought us into the ever-present pain of those bereaved and injured by the explosion in our (Omagh's) Market Street two years ago, We gather now into our hearts, gracious God, all whom they have lost and all that they and others still endure in mind and body.
You are the God of crucified love. Continue to be their life and ours, Compassionate to your creatures everywhere in our tragedies and afflictions, empowering us in the daily work of peace and truth and love, sharing with us in life and in death the glorious fruit of Christ's cross and resurrection,
We ask this in his name, Amen.
A further service is to be broadcast on RTE from St. Mary's in Killyclogher on Sunday this week.
