As the summer months came the Tyrone Constitution was named the top UK Weekly Newspaper of the year in July after winning the Northern Ireland title. The BT national award was presented at a prestigious ceremony in London. Master of ceremonies, Mr James Naughtie of BBC's Radio 4, in a short citation commended the newspaper's coverage of the Omagh bomb.
The final stages of the foundation work on the first of the properties to be rebuilt in Market Street got underway, just weeks before the first anniversary.
Brave Tyrone people, many of whom were disabled by the Omagh bombing, were honoured at the William Keown Trust awards in Belfast.
Drumquin girl, Shauna Skelton, was presented with the Cyril E Stevenson and Sons Cup in the 'Children of Courage' category, in recognition of her selflessness in the aftermath of the atrocity which claimed her mother.
Others picking up Children of Courage awards were Alistair Hall who was injured in the bomb, Ross McKnight for his resilience in the
face of diabetes, and Christopher Gilmour who suffers from leukemia.
