RECORD ENTRY AS DOG SHOW RAISES OVER �6,000 FOR OMAGH FUND
Record entry as dog show raises over �6,000 for Omagh Fund
OMAGH and District Canine Club's annual show saw a record entry on Saturday, with 776 dogs over double the normal entry competing for the coveted trophies.
The event, which boasted entries from throughout the British Isles, was held at the Ecclesville Centre, Fintona, and raised over �6,000 for the Omagh Fund.
All the judges, including the president of the Irish Kennel Club, gave their time free of charge, and organisers presented the prestigious Irish judge with an Omagh District Council plaque as a token of their appreciation.
Blessed with good weather, competitors and spectators alike enjoyed a relaxed atmosphere.
An English Springer Spaniel, Trimere Time Out of Lisnagarvey, belonging to Lisburn exhibitor, Mr. David Murphy, won the best in show award.
A Newfoundland, Ursulas Black Nester with Brooklyn Bear, belonging to William and Amanda Dobbins, from Cloughmills, was awarded the reserve best in show title.
The best puppy in show was a German Short-Haired Pointer called Inishglora Gambit, belonging to Mr. Colum McLaughlin, from Lisburn.
A number of local exhibitors were also successful at the daylong event. They included a Japanese Chin, Dalmore Milkado, belonging to Noel and Joyce Thompson, of 14 Camowen Bungalows, Omagh, who won best of breed at the show.
Kathleen Ward's dog Swillyvalley Neena, took first place in the open class for Norwegian Elkhounds.
A Doberman, Colorado Lad, belonging to Gortin couple, Cyril and June McCombe, took second place in the graduate class for Dobermans, while Strabane competitor, Joe Gallagher's St. Bernard puppy, Bernadinski Tirais, took second place in the any variety working dog category. He also went on to win best of breed and was placed third in the group with his Old English Sheep dog, Brinkley Ballet Girl at Enabarts.
Newfoundlands belonging to Mr. Gault, of Enniskillen, also scored success when three of his exhibits were placed in each of their respective categories.
Pat Swiney, of Kesh, took best of breed with her Norfold Terrier puppy, Rosara Sugar Cane, and went on to win the Terrier Puppy group.
Mr. and Mrs. Noel Kelly, of Seskinore, took the best of breed with their Cocker Spaniel, Kissie Girl, and went on to take second place in the graduate dog or bitch class with their dog, Thornbrook Wish Upon A Star.
In the German Shepherd dogs class, Mr. John McColgan, of Strabane, won the open dogs class with Gercel Chris.
