Heartless thieves steal car of man bereaved in Omagh bombing
HEARTLESS thieves stole and damaged a car belonging to a man who lost his wife in the August 15 bomb last year.
They also made off with hundreds of pounds worth of fishing equipment belonging to father of two, Mr. Stanley McCombe, of Summerhill Park, Hospital Road, Omagh.
One of Mr. McCombe's sons, Clive, first noticed that the car was missing from outside their home just before 7am on Thursday of last week.
"Clive got up at about ten to seven, and was in the bathroom, when he looked outside to see what kind of day it was," Mr. McCombe said.
"He said 'Dad, is someone playing an April fool joke', because the car was not there. But I knew it was no joke as I only have the one set of keys for the car since the bomb", he said.
Although the car was eventually recovered near Fintona by police, Mr. McCombe said it was badly damaged, and hundreds of pounds worth of fishing equipment, including reels, lures and a net, and a camera were taken.
Mr. McCombe said that he also knew that another man's car in the vicinity was taken the same night, and was subsequently found badly damaged.
His own vehicle, a black SRI Cavalier, was extensively damaged to the rear and a front wing. The steering lock and ignition were also damaged.
Mr. McCombe said he was grateful to Omagh motor dealers, Dan Davidson Ltd, for the loan of a car.
Meanwhile, the other vehicle taken, a white Cavalier, was owned by a resident of Edinburgh Park, and police say it was found at Killnaul Road, Caledon, with the windows smashed and the wheels and CD radio stolen.
A police spokeswoman appealed for anyone who saw either vehicle being driven off or abandoned, or who knows the whereabouts of the stolen property, or has been offered it for sale in suspicious circumstances, to get in touch.
