PUBLIC STUDY INTO EFFECTS OF OMAGH BOMBING IS LAUNCHED
Public study into effects of Omagh bombing is launched
THE community study to be undertaken into the wider impact of the Omagh bombing is to get underway.
A leaflet from the Sperrin Lakeland Trust will be widely circulated in the Omagh district over the next week, informing local people about the study. Every adult on the electoral register will receive a questionnaire about a week later, the Trust said.
Speaking about the study, Mr. David Bolton, director of community care, said that the study would be of immense assistance to the Trust in developing an understanding of the needs of local people, and of how the bombing has affected the wider community.
"With that sort of information we will be best able to put in place the services local people will need. The study is particularly important just now, because we have reached the first six months after the bombing and people will have a clearer picture of what it means for them, their family and friends and the wider community.
"We would like everyone who feels able to do so, to complete the questionnaire, even if they do not presently feel they have any needs arising from the bombing. We need to hear from as many people as possible", Mr. Bolton said.
He added: "The information we receive from the study will remain confidential, and only a summary of the findings will be made public. No personal information will be published.
"We hope to make the summary of the findings available through the local papers, once it is available to us. We feel it is important that local people are informed of how the bombing has impacted upon the community".
The Trust believes the lessons learned from the study will provide valuable information about the impact of violence generally, and be of value to other communities which experience major tragedies in the future.
"We expect that completing the questionnaire will create an opportunity for everyone to reflect on how the bombing has affected them and their family. We would encourage anyone who feels the need for advice or support to contact the community trauma and recovery team at the Bridge Centre, or one of the voluntary organisations working in the area, or their family doctor", Mr. Bolton said.

With the help of the Blind Centre for Northern Ireland, the Trust has prepared an audio tape with instructions for those who have poor sight. These tapes will be available from the Bridge Centre, Omagh (01662) 252599 or the Blind Centre in 10 James Street, Omagh, telephone number (01662)250220.
