CONCERT HEARS SPANISH MESSAGE
ST. ANNE'S CATHEDRAL in Belfast was filled with the sound of Irish and Spanish music on Monday night as 400 people attended a concert in memory of the victims of the Omagh bombing, among whom were two Spanish visitors to the town.
The event was organised by the Institute Cervantes in Manchester, in collaboration with the Department of Hispanic Studies at Queen's University, Belfast.
During the proceedings a letter from the parents of 12-year-old Fernando Blasco Baselga to the terrorists responsible for the atrocity was read out.
Among the musicians to perform were Robbie Hannan on the Uilleann pipes, Janice Kennedy, who sang a Capella of the songs, 'Danny Boy' and 'She Moved Through the Fair', and Anne-Marie O'Farrell on the harp, who played celebratory songs from Ireland, north and south, and from Scotland and Wales.
This was followed by an impressive rendition of a song specially written by Ian Gordon.
There was also music on the Spanish guitar from Serranito, who is regarded as one of Spain's finest guitarists, playing a blend of traditional Spanish music.
Serranito, also known as Victor Monge, cancelled two concerts in his native Spain to attend the Belfast event.
