IRISH AND SPANISH MUSIC IN HARMONY FOR OMAGH FUND
Irish and Spanish music in harmony for Omagh Fund
THE Institute Cervantes in Manchester, in collaboration with the Department of Hispanic Studies at Queen's University, Belfast, has organised a concert in memory of the victims of the Omagh bombing, among whom were two Spanish visitors to the town.
The concert is to take place in St. Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, on Monday night, and will feature a selection of Irish and Spanish music.
Among the musicians performing are Robbie Hannan on the pipes, Anne-Marie O'Farrell playing the harp, and the singer, Janice Kennedy.
There will also be music on the Spanish guitar from Serranito, who is regarded as one of Spain's finest guitarists, playing a blend of traditional flamenco and classical Spanish music.
The concert will also feature the first performance of a song specially written by Ian Gordon.
The event forms the prelude to a Spanish week of cultural and educational events to be held in the Province at the beginning of June, organised by the Spanish Embassy in London.
"The events planned for June and the concert itself are intended to commemorate the victims of the atrocity and to serve as a gesture of solidarity between the people of Northern Ireland and of Spain," said a spokesman for the organisers.
"Both the Spanish authorities and the people of Spain have been moved by the deep humanity which characterised the response of people here to the bombing in general and the death of the two young Spaniards in particular," he said.
Entry to the Omagh memorial concert is free, but it is hoped that donations will be made to the Omagh Fund.
