CHRISTMAS IN OMAGH TIME FOR REFLECTION
Christmas in Omagh 'time for reflection'
THE chairman and vice-chairman of Omagh District Council have said there can be no better tribute to the people of Omagh than a new start for Northern Ireland in 1999.
In their joint Christmas message, Mr. Sean Clarke and Mr. Allan Rainey said they were mindful that this Christmas in Omagh would be a time for reflection on a year which would be forever remembered for the horrific events of Saturday, August 15.
"We, as a community, have a duty to support the bereaved and to help in any way we can at what is traditionally a time of celebration for families," their message said.
"We are indebted to the good people of this island both north and south, who, through their prayers and practical support by visiting our town, have helped to sustain the lifeblood of our community throughout these past four months."
The chairman and vice-chairman also asked the community to remember the people of Buncrana and Spain, who shared in their suffering at this time.
"As we look to the future and the painstaking process of rebuilding our town begins, it is our hope that 1999 will bring an end to the heartache of the past 30 years," they said.
"With the approach of the new millennium, we can think of no better tribute to the people of Omagh than a new start for Northern Ireland.
"On behalf of the members of Omagh District Council, we would like to extend our sincere good wishes for a 'Happy Christmas' and a peaceful new year to each and everyone of you."
