REBUILDING MUST HAPPEN QUICKLY, SAYS ASSEMBLYMAN
Rebuilding must happen quickly, says Assemblyman
WEST Tyrone SDLP Assembly member and Omagh councillor, Mr. Joe Byrne, in a statement this week said the people of Omagh wanted to see the rebuilding of the Market Street bomb site and its damaged buildings started without any further delay.
"I believe strongly that the sooner the repair of damaged buildings and the building of new ones starts in Market Street, the better. People are still feeling uneasy and depressed in the aftermath of the Omagh bomb."
They need their spirits uplifted and therefore the rebuilding programme will greatly add to their sense of recovery and make them more hopeful about the future of our town. The sooner traffic is allowed to travel up Market Street the better for shopkeepers and shoppers alike, in the whole Market Street area," said Mr. Byrne.
He went on: "I urge all the relevant authorities to quickly agree upon what buildings are to be demolished and get on with the rebuilding programme to the satisfaction of the property owners and the relevant business people. It is very important that before the onset of the Christmas shopping period all sections of the town have normal traffic arrangements in operation. Therefore it is vital that all demolition is carried out as quickly as possible and actual rebuilding commenced."
And he concluded: "I would urge the Northern Ireland Office, and the relevant planning personnel, to ensure that local professional building services firms are not ignored in favour of larger Belfast based firms when it comes to the awarding of contracts relating to reconstruction. It would be very annoying if local architects, quantity surveyors or engineering services firms were to be snubbed."
