JUST AND LASTING PEACE WOULD BE FITTING MEMORIAL
Just and lasting peace would be a fitting memorial'
A FITTING memorial to those who died in the Omagh bomb atrocity would be a just and lasting peace, the town's Methodist minister, Rev. Peter Good, said at the autumn Synod of the Methodist church's Tyrone, Londonderry and Donegal district.
Mr. Good, who is also chairman of the district, said he had grieved deeply for the bereaved and injured, noting that members of his own congregations died, some were badly injured, while others were severely traumatised.
He told delegates: "From our meeting comes an expression of sympathy, going out to all the bereaved and hurting families in Omagh, Buncrana and Spain."
"With this expression of Christian love comes a commitment to pray for God's healing and strengthening by his Holy Spirit."
Mr. Good spoke of a prayer he wrote earlier this year, and which now he felt, had even greater relevance. It was:
God of Love,
enfold the hurt, and bereaved in your embrace
God of Peace
Heal the blindness of those who
Plan acts of terror.
God of Hope
your universal reign is coming.
Also at the Synod meeting, ministers and lay representatives from each congregation discussed the role of women in the church. The subject was introduced by the minister of Stabane and Newbulidings Methodist Churches, Rev. Daphne Twinem.
It was felt that not only women, but men too, needed to be encouraged to discover their gifts, and to use them in the life of the church.
The women delegates said they were local preachers or leaders in the local churches, and felt no discrimination against them.
