POLICE CHIEF VOWS TO BRING BOMBERS TO JUSTICE
Police chief vows to bring bombers to justice
RUC Chief Constable, Mr. Ronnie Flanagan, has vowed that those who carried out the Omagh bombing will be brought to justice.
Mr Flanagan made his comments at a crimestoppers conference in Dublin, where he shared a platform with his Garda counterpart, Mr. Pat Byrne.
The RUC and Garda have special operations centres in Omagh and Carrickmacross, and they are in constant touch with each other.
Said Mr. Flanagan: "The people of Ireland can be reassured of the level of co-operation between the RUC and Garda - it has never been of a higher order."
He said the links between the incident centres was typical of the close co-operation between the two forces.
The investigation was going satisfactorily, said Mr Flanagan, and he added: "I have no doubt - and I am not going to speculate on the time-frame that we will bring to justice those who carried out that atrocity."
He went on to assess that there was only a "minimal threat" from the Continuity IRA, the only terror organisation which has not declared a ceasefire.
Although the threat was not high, it could not be ignored, Mr. Flanagan said.
"All of the organisations which say they are on cessations are holding firmly to those cessations," said the Chief Constable."
"But we cannot be complacent because they do retain a capability and we must maintain our capability to protect the public against any threat," he added.
Mr. Flanagan said decommissioning was a political issue, but the RUC would continue to work towards detecting illegal weapons, and bringing to justice anyone possessing them.
The Southern investigation is said to be one of the biggest Garda� have mounted in recent years.
According to chief superintendent Colum Rooney, the force was delighted with the public response from throughout the Republic to appeals for information.
He said people were shocked and outraged by what had happened in Omagh, and he, too, said he was confident the bombers would be brought to justice.
Meanwhile, West Tyrone MP, MR. William Thompson, has asked for an urgent meeting with the Chief Constable of the RUC, Mr. Ronnie Flanagan, over the Omagh bomb inquiry.
Mr. Thompson said he would be seeking an update on the efforts made to bring the perpetrations to justice.
