Former Omagh woman raises 10,000 US dollars for fund
A FORMER Omagh woman now living in America has helped raise $10,000 for the Omagh Memorial Fund.
Karen McCrory, who lives in Pennsylvania, organized two evenings of music and entertainment in Philadelphia and received overwhelming support from local people.
Karen is a daughter of Ted and Veronica McCurry, of Knocksilla Grove, and has lived in the USA for 13 years. Karen, who married an American earlier this year, works in music management and marketing.
As her mother explained, Karen was on the phone to a friend in Omagh when the bomb went off on August 15.
Before the telephones went dead she managed to ascertain that some of her immediate family had been caught up in the blast.
Indeed her mother who is a retired sister in the accident and emergency department at Tyrone County Hospital immediately went there to give what help she could.
And, as the full horror of the atrocity began to emerge, Karen realized she had known many of those involved.
Among them was Avril Monaghan, who was in the same class as Karen for five years at the Loreto Grammar School, Karen also spent many happy days visiting Avril's home at Beragh.
When the memorial fund was set up, Karen decided to do something so that people in Pennsylvania could show their support for those who were killed and those who were injured.
She organized a benefit evening which raised $5,000 and was so successful that a second was arranged, raising a similar amount.
In an interview with a newspaper in Pennyslvania, Karen said that like other people from Ireland, she found it hard to understand how any Irish person could be responsible for such an attack.
