FUNDS ANNOUNCEMENT EXPECTED SOON ON ARTS CENTRE

Funds announcement expected soon on Arts Centre

FUNDING for Omagh's new 5million Arts Centre could be announced later this month, the head of arts and tourism at Omagh District Council, Mr Frank Sweeney, said this week.
Speaking on Monday, Mr. Sweeney said that additional work on the business plan for the centre, which will be based on the site of the old Town Hall, had been carried out, and would be finalised at a meeting today (Thursday) with Coopers and Lybrand.
"This will then be passed to the Arts Council and will hopefully be dealt with at its Lottery committee meeting later this month," he said.
The Arts Council project has been going on for some time, and will include a footbridge link to Omagh College of Further Education.
It is anticipated that the state-of-the-art centre will be used for a wide range of community activities with a room set aside to display the hundreds of books of condolence and tributes collected in the aftermath of the August 15th bombing.
Mr. Sweeney said the council was pushing for the centre to viewed as an integrated project, not just isolated to the arts.
And he said: "As soon as it is announced that the money is available, we will start to knock down the old Town Hall."
"We have a contract out for the demolition of the building and once funding is announced we should be able to run."
