80 TEAMS EXPECTED FOR MEMORIAL TROPHY
80 Teams expected for memorial trophy
PREPARATIONS for the major golfing competition being held in Omagh with the proceeds going to the Omagh Memorial Fund are well advanced.
Clubs both North and South of the border have been holding qualifying competitions for the grand final which takes place in Omagh on the weekend of October 10 and 11.
The competition is the brain child of four businessmen in Newry, and 80 clubs are likely to be represented in the final which will climax with a major evening of entertainment involving star personalities.
Robert Johnston, the captain of Omagh Golf Club, said the support being received was tremendous and he had been overwhelmed by interest shown.
He said Ballybunion Golf Club, which could not enter a team because it had another competition on the same weekend, had made a "major donation" to the golf fund and it would be all passed on to the main fund.
Meanwhile, at last week's Darren Clarke Pro-Am competition in support of the memorial fund, the Omagh Golf Club Team finished fourth overall.
The team, which was strengthened by the inclusion of Irish open champion David Carter, was Mickey McElroy, Nigel Pollock and Robert Johnston.
