Round-the-world peace walker leaves symbol of reconciliation in Omagh
PEACE walker, Mr Danny Garcia, stopped off in Omagh on Friday last, on a round-the-world ramble that will take him from Dublin to Sydney.
He began his 40,000-mile trek in the Irish capital on Tuesday last carrying a valuable cross of peace, made up of 8,000 cultured Chinese pearls, which he presented to the people of Omagh as a symbol of reconciliation.
Wearing a colourful poncho and bandanna, Mr Garcia walked to the Omagh District Council offices, where he met pupils from Drumragh College, Omagh High School, Christian Brothers Grammar School, Loreto Grammar School, Omagh Academy, St Brigid's High School and St Patrick's High School.
The weather on his journey was unusually good, and he only got wet once.
"I have never seen such a beautiful country," he exclaimed on arrival in Omagh.
Mr. Garcia has dedicated his life to promoting peace and the welfare of children.
The Vietnam veteran has been travelling all over the world since 1978, describing himself as "the original Forrest Gump."
"My life has been like his. But I didn't see the movie, I started walking first," he said.
Mr Garcia left Omagh to walk towards Belfast, before flying to Glasgow. From there he will walk to London and then on to the Continent, before heading for Africa, the Middle East and Australia.
He will stop off in other places recently affected by tragedy, including Bosnia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
