AUSTRALIANS DEVASTATED
Australians 'devestated'
Sir,
On May 14 this year, as Tom and I were driven into Omagh for our third holiday there, last in 1984, we could not help but notice how Omagh had grown and how lovely both the Nicoll and Sheilds and Mrs. Slevin's chemist shops looked.
Later, as we were shopping in High and Market Streets, we remarked at how smart the shopping centre was.
We spent two wonderful months staying with our relatives in Tyrone, and visiting friends and relatives in Tyrone, Fermanagh, Donegal and Down.
Tom was born in Irvinestown, Co Fermanagh, and has lived in Australia since 1950.
A week after we arrived people voted 'Yes' for peace in Ulster - we felt part of history in the making.
We visited both Catholic and Protestant friends (as we do freely here in Australia). I went on a coach tour with a group of Catholic ladies - we all had a great day together. We felt happy in a town Tom and I have grown to love during our three visits - the first in 1980-81 was for 9 months and we felt that we 'belonged there'.
To say that we were devastated to hear of the dreadful bomb, causing death and horrific injuries, as well as such damage to our loved town, is an understatement, our thoughts and prayers go to the relatives and friends of those killed, as well as to those who were so cruelly injured.
God willing, one day, we will return to Omagh - and to a peaceful Ireland.
