THEN THERE WAS SILENCE (POEM)

Then there was silence

As night falls, a hush settles on that fatal street,
Like a mother's breath on her body's cheek,
Lulling it to rest.

Blood and water mingle, trickling through the debris,
Tracing a tortuous path through,
What remains of broken lives,
Becoming thick and heavy- with tears.
With cries, with anger, with shock, with grief.

Closed by tortured eyes are pleading,
Why here? Why now? Why me?
Searching for children, searching for fathers,
Mothers, brothers, sisters.
Searching for a meaning, unable to be found.

Tormented eyes, witnesses of grotesque evil,
All innocence now ripped away,
Are left to search for those missing faces,
Among their shattered dreams and fading memories.

And for what cause? Who cares?
Because for many now, only silence.
