Bangers would inflict terror on traumitised community - councillor
Omagh district councilor, Mr. Paddy McGowan, has issued a special plea to ban fireworks and bangers in the run-up to Hallowe'en this year, following the bomb in the town less than four weeks ago.
He said the insensitive use of explosive substances by young people over a sustained period would inflict terror on an already traumatised community.
"I'm not trying to spoil Hallowe'en night, but there is no need for it to run from September to November," he insisted.
This has been a traumatic time, and it would be unfair to force frightened people to relive awful memories over and over again, night after night.
Mr McGowan said old people and children had been shocked by bangers in the past, and the present situation would make matters worse.
"People are frightened and living on their nerves. Any bang of any kind is too much to take," he said.
A period of meditation and silence would be more appropriate at this time, he suggested.
Mr McGowan also appealed to traders and market stall holders not to stock these dangerous products.
"I would appeal to all outlets which sell fireworks and bangers, particularly those traders coming into the town weekly, to ensure that this be a year free from nightly torment to many people," he said.
Mr McGowan also criticized the burning of rubber on bonfires, which blackens walls and windows, and damages listed buildings.
