Buncrana joins in remembrance
A SERVICE of Remembrance was held in Buncrana on Thursday evening last to mark the fourth anniversary of the Omagh bomb tragedy.
More than 150 people gathered at Knockalla Drive at 10pm to remember Oran Doherty (8) and Shaun McLaughlin (12) and to offer prayers and ongoing sympathy to their families.
As in the previous three years, people of all ages walked quietly to the close-knit housing estate to offer their support to all the families bereaved by the atrocity.
Also remembered were James Barker (12), as well as the Spanish pair, Fernando Blasco Baselga (12) and his teacher Rocio Abad Ramos (23), who perished in the Real IRA blast which claimed the lives of 29 people and unborn twins on August 15, 1998.
Teenagers gathered in small groups while their mothers and fathers, clutching candles, kept younger brothers and sisters close by.
As a tribute to the victims from Madrid, Spanish representatives said prayers in their native language, followed by the response in English by locals who gathered from surrounding housing estates and other parts of the town.
Earlier in the day, some of the victims' families travelled to Omagh for a cross-community service at the Garden of Remembrance.
